POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND POCUS TRAINING

15/01/2025.
The annual Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training, a collaborative initiative between the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) and the University of California Davis Emergency Department, plays a vital role in advancing medical practice in The Gambia. Now in its sixth year, the program, led by Dr. Christine McBet and Dr. Lamin Jaiteh from the Department of Surgery, offers hands-on training to doctors from various specialties, including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Radiology, Anesthesia, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During this period, participants would learn how to effectively use ultrasound technology for bedside patient diagnostics in the Accident and Emergency (A/E) department and hospital wards. This training enhances the ability to make real-time, accurate diagnoses, improving the quality of care and enabling healthcare workers to make informed, timely decisions. As a result, patient outcomes are significantly improved, not only at EFSTH but across the country.
This program highlights the crucial role of international partnerships in strengthening healthcare systems and driving sustainable improvements in resource-limited settings.
